About the Work
The compact cassette was first presented at the International Radio Exhibition in 1963 together with a small, compact cassette tape recorder. It became increasingly important in the following decades. Due to its easy handling and inexpensive purchase the compact cassette took on a major role in the music industry in particular. Until the 1980s, cassettes were the recording media par excellence.
With the CD and certainly with the MP3, the cassette was outdated as a storage and playback medium. It was displaced as a niche product. User-friendliness played an important role in this development.
Against this background, the cassette as an analog medium is an allegory for the conventional approach in product development and therefore the contrary to digitalization. This creates a thematic contrast between analog and digital, between conventional and "rethought".
The tapes - both in spooled and unwound, tangled form - and the case with its technical details are elements that are highlighted. The colors are kept in contrast black and white. This puts the focus on the individual components, their geometry and aesthetics.
About the Photos
The photos were taken at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf. Thank you very much for allowing us to have the photo shoot there. A special thanks to Alina Fuchte for giving us access to the location and for her patience for the duration of the photo shoot.
I would also like to express my sincere thanks to David Horstmann for the great images he captured.
About myself
Hi, my name is Jovana Rademacher, I studied product development at the HSNR in Mönchengladbach and recently graduated with my bachelor's degree.
I enjoyed developing patterns and working on the sewing machine from an early age, but I initially chose a career in the medical field. After some time, I wanted to reorientate myself and looked for a field of study that combined both technical and creative elements. I found exactly this combination for me in the subject of product development.
I´m focused on the development and design of patterns in women's outerwear. I especially enjoy the development and virtual realization of patterns. It is an optimal technical tool for visualisation. Patterns, materials and avatars are combined in the 3D simulation. This opens up a huge variety of design possibilities.
That's why I dedicated my final thesis to virtual product development, tracing the entire process from textile design to the finished product using Grafis and browzwear's 3D software VStitcher.
